Many dog owners admire the unique looks and personalities of purebreds, but also worry about the fate of millions of pets euthanized each year.

What many people don’t realize is that there are specific breed rescue organizations for almost every breed of dog, placing dogs in need with new families.

Rescue groups are an invaluable resource in the ongoing battle to keep millions of pets from being euthanized.

With armies of volunteers, these organizations not only rescue their specific breed from shelters and other situations, but provide them with medical care. In many cases, these dogs are rescued just days – even hours – before euthanasia is scheduled.

The success of rescue groups is due in part to how well they work co-operatively with local shelters and humane societies.

In a shelter situation, it can be difficult to not let pets be adopted by people who may not be the best match for the pet. With a breed rescue, both dogs and applicants have the resources to be carefully screened to help find the right match between an individual dog and its new family. Rescue organizations can provide a much-needed way of "buying time" for some of these pets.

As it is for the Kingston Humane Society, it is the goal of rescue organizations to find each and every pet its forever home.

Breed rescues routinely receive young, healthy pets from families whose circumstances prevent them from properly caring for the animal.

In Kingston, our humane society, and our breed rescue organizations, have become proficient at matching the right dog to the right person. By evaluating the dog’s personality and thoroughly screening the potential owners, breed rescues and our humane society have achieved high success rates placing dogs in lasting homes.

In addition, education about the breed before the adoption and strong follow-up support after adoption helps new owners through this transition period.

Be prepared to be patient when adopting from a breed rescue organization. You should expect to fill out an application, provide references and have a home check done. In most cases, a good rescue organization will probably take one to three weeks for the entire adoption process.

I know of one kind Kingston family who rescued their first Bouvier 15 years ago. They had such a positive experience, that they went on to save the lives and provide a wonderful home life for seven more Bouviers. The contentious allegation  -  from a catloving researcher  -  follows the first large-scale attempt in 20 years to estimate the number of pet dogs and cats in Britain’s homes. Using census data, information on household sizes and a phone survey, Bristol University cat expert Dr Jane Murray concluded that the nation’s hearths are home to some 10.3million cats and 10.5million dogs.

Around 26 per cent of households own cats and 31 per cent have dogs. And many don’t stop at one. This week’s Veterinary Record reports that one in 60 households has between six and 12 pet cats and one in 100 is home to between six and 17 dogs. Concerns about fur flying mean that just 7 per cent of families have both cats and dogs. Families with young children are less likely to have dogs, perhaps because they lack the time to exercise a pet.

The center says it was a successful day, and many pets were adopted.

"We do have an excess of animals in the community, but there are a lot of really great animals here," said volunteer Mary O’Connor. "So it’s good that people can come in and see them without being afraid to come in, that it’s going to be a sad and depressing place."

The center’s best advice on passionate pets, however, is to get them spayed and neutered.

The adoption celebration will be held at the Animal Services Shelter located at 7401 NW 74 St. in Miami.

The Valentine’s Day Pet Adoption Party will give residents the opportunity to adopt dogs and cats who are in need of a loving home. Anyone who adopts a pet at the event will receive a complimentary picture with their new family member.

Adoption Requirements: Interested adopters must be at least 18 years old. Adoption fees apply, including a $50 refundable deposit if the pet is not yet spayed or neutered. Only Miami-Dade County residents may adopt pets under the spay/neuter agreement.

Attendance is free and open to the public. Donations of dog and/or cat toys are appreciated, Animal Services said.

Taking cover from the drizzle underneath one of many awnings under which pet rescue groups had their information booths, James St. Louis shared how his wife had been longing for a little dog to keep her company ever since the couple moved to The Villages.
“Since we moved down here, (getting a dog) is all she’s talked about,” St. Louis said. “The kids are grown and gone and we’re alone now. We need something to fill the void.”
Perhaps Scottie, a wheaten terrier-mix, was just the solution.
Though James St. Louis said they were on the hunt for a “small non-barker,” Scottie, a quiet little fellow just under medium-sized, won his approval.

Potential owners like the St. Louises are just the kind of compassionate folks Ann Bitting appreciates seeing during pet adoption events.
Villagers are ideal pet owners because they are at retirement age, said Bitting, a volunteer with Max’s Pet Connection, which was on hand with 16 dogs.
Villages residents “have the time for their dogs,” the Village of Winifred resident said. “Twenty-four/seven, they’re here.”
Pets, she explained, become “a second child” for many retirees.
“They like to get out and walk around and go to the dog parks and walk around the neighborhood,” Bitting said.
Nearly every canine imaginable of various sizes and breeds was available on Saturday — everything from “Chihuahuas to Mastiffs,” Bitting said.
And Villagers weren’t the only ones on the prowl for a four-legged pal.
Bitting said many hopeful adoptive parents came from as far away as Jacksonville, as well as nearby locations of Ocala, Mount Dora, Inverness and Williston, hoping to complete their pet adoption journey in Oxford, just outside Florida’s Friendliest Hometown.
Representing those out-of-towners were Jeanine Vigneau and her husband Rod, of Leesburg.
It wasn’t their first time adopting a dog from a Doggy Doo Run Run adoption event, Jeanine Vigneau said. “We already have one that we adopted here three years ago.”
On Saturday, Vigneau hoped to find “a brother or sister” for her other beloved canine Mickey.
It didn’t take long for a precious pup she considered naming Minnie to capture her heart. As Vigneau held the tiny brown Chihuahua in her arms, she explained her possible choice of name.
“We named our other dog Mickey, and I was always saying if we get a female, it’ll be Minnie,” she said. “So it might be Minnie — not sure yet though.”
The sight of Vigneau snuggling Minnie underneath a tent, out of the rain, likely gave hope to the other homeless animals on site. Maybe they, too, would be discovered by such kindhearted families as the St. Louises and the Vigneaus.

“She’s giving to six different charities this year,” she said of her daughter.

Amanda and her mom were invited to help deliver the 40 dog cots bought with money raised by Mike and Renee Gee, owners of Village Groomer and Animal Inn.

“I was really excited when they asked me to come,” Amanda said. “I’m 17, so I’m at an age that I really don’t want the toys and things that I did when I was younger.”

The Northwest High student donated $100 for dog beds and plans to make smaller donations to causes like a girls school in Africa and buying school supplies for kids in Iraq.

“I hope she continues doing things like this,” said Gloria Blankenship, adding that last year Amanda bought gifts for a person whose name was placed on a Christmas tree at the Senior Citizens Center. “But animals are her thing.”

Amanda, Village Groomer employees and Animal Control officers carried in the beds from a truck loaned by Riverside Brake and Muffler to haul them.

As they placed them in kennels, some dogs took to them right away while others shied away.

Mike Gee said the beds arrived Tuesday and he, Renee and their employees formed an assembly line to put them together.

“I know what Santa’s elves feel like now,” he joked.

The Gees were impressed with Amanda’s donation, as well as support from the local community and from people as far away as Murfreesboro and Smyrna.

“It was such a wonderful thing she did,” said Renee Gee. “It was an unselfish thing to do for a young girl, who might rather buy clothes or shoes or something. … So many times with teens, it’s me, me, me. It’s nice to know that some really think about others.”

She gave Amanda a gift bag filled with dog treats and a photo album for her “new baby.” Amanda adopted a corgi three weeks ago while volunteering at Precious Friends animal rescue.

Pet Refuge adding extra adoption days to deal with feline overcrowding

Feline overcrowding is becoming a problem at Pet Refuge in Mishawaka, so they are holding extra cat adoption days in December.

Pet Refuge will have an adoption day from noon to 2 p.m. on Sunday to help find owners for the hundreds of cats who are in need of a good home for the holidays.

Pet Refuge of Mishawaka has seen an influx in the number of homeless cats. Currently they have over 500 cats waiting to be adopted. So the shelter has increased their adoption days and reduced their adoption rates.

“And it’s really a pretty good deal. For 75 dollars you get a cat that’s completely up to date, already spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, and has a rabies vaccination,” said Linda Candler of Pet Refuge. “So a free kitten is not a free kitten. It’s 200 or 300 dollars if you do all of that. So it is a really good deal.”

Division manager for San Diego’s Moreno Valley Animal Services Steve Fries attempted to bust the myths surrounding creatures that have gone through a shelter.

He was quoted by the Press Entreprise as saying people should not believe these critters have been traumatised by whatever they have gone through prior to being adopted.

“Shelter pets are not damaged pets, quite the contrary,” he noted, adding: “New shelter pet owners report great success after adopting.”

Among advantages experienced by people is the knowledge they may have saved an animal’s life and getting a dog or cat that is already house-trained.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals has warned against buying pets from a pet store.

It said these retailers will often source from puppy mills, which can have an unethical way of breeding dog
